A "Staff" Member

In the early 1700's, the Fire Warden directed the colonists in forming a bucket brigade and also helped manage the colonists' firefighting equipment. He also inspected the colonists' chimneys to make sure they were fire safe. An appointed, paid position, the Fire Warden's symbol of authority was the staff he carried.
This graphic shows a Fire Warden with his staff. The Fire Warden functioned as the Fire Chief of his day.
