Jumping for Joy

The hose cart or jumper was used to bring additional hose to the site of a fire. This apparatus was called a jumper because it could be hauled or "jumped" over curbs. At first, firemen pulled the jumper to fires, but eventually some fire departments used a horse to pull their hose cart.
Before the advent of the hose cart, firemen had to carry hose to the fire on their shoulders!
